NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

January 3, 2017

The January meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Ken Ludwig.  There were twelve attendees.

The Secretary’s Report for November was read by Bob Hart and was accepted as read.  There was no Secretary’s Report for December as it was our Annual Christmas Party.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Treasurer Bill Richie.  There is $1909.03 in our treasury.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

Ken reminded the membership our Annual Fundraising Banquet will be held on Saturday, February 4th at the Torrington Elks Club.  Members were asked to solicit donations for the various prizes.  Scott Richie was going to contact Jim Fedorich to get an update on the gun and crossbow prizes for the card game.  Evan Williams was going to take care of obtaining the gift certificates for the main raffle, a fishing outfit from Orvis, and some bucket raffle prizes from Cabela, etc.  Bill Richie was going to take care of getting the wine for prizes and giveaways.

Ken announced a meeting of the officers on Wednesday, January 11th.  He will lock down the location and time.  We will finalize planning for the banquet.

Dick Heffernon gave an update on TIC.  Our chapter currently supports nine schools.  Dick reported all the eggs survived the Christmas break and some of the eggs have started to hatch.  Bob Hart reported he ran in to a teacher from Regional 7 school who  mentioned the school used to be involved with SIC and have a new biology teacher that could get back involved in TIC.

Ken discussed wanting to get the club more involved with youth groups, ie the Young Antlers Group affiliated with the Elks Club.  We can look at various activities such as casting clinics, fly tying, etc.

Ken also talked to us about the Healing Waters Project, which is a group he is leading in this area.  This project takes disabled veterans and gives them time on the water, as well as activities such as fly casting and fly tying.  Although this program is geared at disabled vets, Ken wants to get any and all vets involved, even if they are classified as “observers”.  He mentioned TU National has just established a new position responsible for supporting the Healing Waters Project.  Ron Leoni volunteered to head a committee to organize some volunteers to start up a local fly tying class for the Healing Waters Project.  Part of what they need to look at and report on is an inventory of what supplies and equipment we have access to, and generate a list of materials we will need to obtain.

We held a fly swap this evening.

The program tonight was a DVD provided by Ken on “The Healing Waters Project”.  This gave our members a better idea of what this organization was, who they helped, and how we can fit in.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7th, 2017 at the Torrington Elks Club at 7:30 PM.  Don’t forget our Anuual Fundraising Game Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 4th at the Torrington Elks Club – doors to open at 6 PM with dinner at 7 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
