NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

January 6, 2015

The January meeting was called to order at 7:40 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim Fedorich.  There were fifteen attendees.

The Secretary’s Report for December was given by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Treasurer Bill Richie.  There is $2083.97 in our treasury with $150 slated for TIC.  There have been several expenses in preparation of our upcoming banquet that have reduced the balance that was reported.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

Jim reported the banquet was going to be held on Saturday, February 21st at the Torrington Elks Club.  Jim passed out menus of the meal for people to look at.  A rifle and crossbow have already been purchased for the card game raffle.  Evan Williams is contacting Orvis to try to get a rod and reel outfit.  Jim has contacted L.L. Bean to see if we might get any prize materials from them.

Jim reported the annual Farmington River Chapter of TU fishing tag sale was to be held on Wednesday, January 7th at the Farmington Senior Center from 6 – 9 PM.

TU National sent a directive to our chapter to change the name of our Christmas Party to “Holiday Party”.  There were a lot of upset comments from the membership over this directive.

Dick Heffernon gave us an update on TIC.  There had been a chiller problem in one of the schools in December and that unit was replaced.  All participating schools reported the eggs had hatched.

We had two speakers from the CT DEEP this evening.  First up was Mike Humphries, state fishery biologist giving an update on the Cornwall Bridge TMA.  Mike showed data the Farmington River survivor strain of brown trout were holding over significantly better than the Cortland strain in the Housatonic River.  He talked about stocking survivor strains of browns, including frye stocking.  Mike concluded with a presentation of thermal refuge enhancements, such as with the Furnace Brook project.

Don Meisling then spent time reporting on the DEEP’s efforts regarding Habitat Conservation and Enhancement.

The meeting adjourned at 9:35 PM.

Our February meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd , 2015 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.  The program for the evening is TBD.  Remember to support our Annual Game Dinner Banquet on February 21st  – this is our only fundraiser of the year.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
