NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

January 7, 2014

The January meeting was called to order at 7:40 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by Acting President Jim Fedorich.  There were nine attendees.

The Secretary’s Report for December was given by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Jim Fedorich.  There is $1809.97 in our treasury with $150 slated for TIC.  The treasurer’s report was accepted but there was discussion to have the details of the spending for the past month available to the membership at the next meeting.

Jim updated us on our upcoming Annual Sportsmen’s Dinner Fundraiser to be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Torrington Elks Club.  The menu and information sheet have been printed up and are available from Jim if anyone is interested in posting them.  Dinner tickets are now available and are $40 per ticket.  Seating will be at tables set up for eight people to help with the flow of food.

Raffle tickets are available now for $5.00/ticket with only 300 tickets printed.  There are 5 prizes in the form of gift certificates: 1st - $250 Upcountry Sports, 2nd - $200 Housatonic River Outfitters, 3rd – Newbury Archery, 4th – Autumn Gun Works, 5th – Housatonic River Outfitters.

The major card game prizes will be a muzzle loader with sling, scope and case from Autumn Gun works; a crossbow from Newbury Archery; and a rod/reel/line outfit donated by Orvis.  Jim and Evan will be attending the upcoming fly fishing show in Massachusetts to obtain some of the bucket raffle prizes.

Scott Richie mentioned the Northwest Sports Council may be willing to help defray some of the costs of the TIC backup chiller and controller.  He will bring it up at their next meeting.

Scott also mentioned he has some survey forms available to help evaluate the deer population in Connecticut.  This information is being requested by the Connecticut State Council.

Jim told us that Ed Machowski from the CT DEEP is now ready to start training people for the Culvert Inventorying Program.  Jim will look to coordinate some dates with Ed to train some of our members.  Jim also announced the DEEP says we do not have the entire Northwest corner to do by ourselves – there will be other clubs and organizations involved, such as schools and other environmental groups.

The Boulder Project to put an additional 100 large boulders in the Naugatuck River is moving along.  Don Meisley from the CT DEEP has made a proposal to the Army Corp of Engineers.  They will proceed based on an amendment, or Phase II, to the original boulder project.  This will make it easier to get approved as opposed to starting up a new project.  Don is to have an application made out and submitted to the Army Corp by the end of March.

The meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM.

Our February meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.  The program for the evening will be an update on the Salmon Kill Creek Restoration Project given by Tracy Brown from TU National.

See you then.  And don’t forget to support our Annual Fundraising Banquet on Saturday, February 8th.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
