NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

January 8, 2013

The January meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim Fedorich.  There were seventeen attendees.

The Secretary’s report for November was read by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.  There were no minutes for the December meeting as this was our Christmas party downstairs at the Elks Club – there were twenty-seven attendees.

There was no Treasurer’s report tonight.

President Jim Fedorich announced there were embroidered TU hats with our chapter name on them for sale for $25 each.

The Annual Naugatuck River Cleanup will be held on Saturday, June 1st at the Torrington Senior Center from 9:00 AM to noon.

Jim discussed the upcoming annual fundraising banquet to be held February 2nd.  Banquet and raffle tickets are now available.  There will be five prizes consisting of gift certificates to Upcountry Sports Fishing, Housatonic River Outfitters and Autumn Gun Works.  There will be three colorized framed pictures of the Naugatuck, Farmington and Housatonic Rivers to be auctioned off.  Card game prizes will be a CVA 50 cal muzzleloader with scope and sling, an Orvis Access 4 wgt 10 ft rod and reel outfit, and a Parker Bushmaster crossbow. We will also have a silent auction for a fishing guide trip on the Farmington River with Orvis guide Antoine Bissieux.  It was also mentioned members should start soliciting donations now for the bucket raffles.

Darlene Ostrosky and Pauline Krofssik have volunteered to help promote “Women in Trout Unlimited” program.

Pauline reported “Casting for Recovery” would be held June 14th-16th at the Wisdom House.  There will be a fishing session on the 16th from 9:30 AM – noon on the Naugatuck River.  We will see if the DEEP can do a mini stocking for the event.

A discussion was held on the MDC proposal to divert 5MM gallons per day from the Northwest Connecticut watershed to sell to UCONN for increased water usage.  There was universal support within the Club to oppose this move.  Bob Hart will send a letter on behalf of the Club to Commissioner Dan Esty of the DEEP to express the Club’s opposition.

The program for the evening was a talk by Mike Humphreys, Connecticut DEEP Biologist.  Mike updated us on the Housatonic River Project that has now completed two years of work, as well as on the Wild Trout Project.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 PM.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 5th at the Torrington Elks Club at 7:30 PM.  The program for the evening will be a talk by Tracey Brown on using GE grant monies to fund projects on the Salmon Kill River.  And don’t forget our banquet at the Elks on Saturday, February 2nd.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
