NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

March 4, 2014

The March meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by Acting President Jim Fedorich.  There were fourteen attendees.

The Secretary’s Report for February was given by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Jim Fedorich.  There is $4002.10 in our treasury with $150 slated for TIC.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

Jim updated us on the results of our Annual Sportsmen’s Dinner Fundraiser  held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Torrington Elks Club.  There were 110 dinner tickets purchased plus 6 complimentary tickets totaling 116 attendees.  We reviewed the expenses and revenues of each of the fundraising items for the evening.

One area we discussed further was the main raffle.  Revenues were down this year compared to previous years.  Some thoughts discussed to improve this next year were to get more donated items, look at possibility of a higher end prize, go back to mailing tickets out to membership and look at selling advertising, like on placemats.

Jim discussed the training on the Culvert Inventorying Program.  Ed Machowski of the CT DEEP will get back to us with dates once the weather gets a little warmer.

Mike Alciati will be taking over the Membership Chairman role from Dave Pavola who has moved down south.

Anyone interested in either the president’s or treasurer’s positions, please submit your name to Jim Fedorich.

A motion was made and carried to donate $200 to Eric Long to help support the Kid’s Fishing Derby in Riverton on Opening Day.

The program for the evening was a presentation by Tim Barry, CT DEEP.  Tim briefly talked about the annual trout stocking program.  He said due to the adverse weather conditions, the State is way behind on the early stocking for Opening Day, and they are running out of time.  He also said due to some personnel reductions, feeding and grading of the fish wasn’t done as well as in past years.  As a result the average size is in the 10-12” range with the remaining fish smaller and some larger.  The good news is the fisheries department will be hiring 2 new people in the near future.

Tim then spent most of the presentation going over a LEAN exercise the fisheries department did to optimize fish production.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 PM.

Our April meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1st, 2014 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.  The program for the evening is TBD.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
