NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

March 1, 2011

The March meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim Fedorich.  Twelve people were in attendance.

There was no Secretary’s Report for February as the meeting was cancelled due to bad weather.  The Secretary’s Report for January was read by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Evan Williams. There is currently $2243.45 in our checkbook.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

Bob Hart gave an update on the results of our Annual Fundraising Game Dinner held on February 12th at the Torrington Elks Club.  There were 107 people in attendance.  We had an income of $6721.00 with costs of $5597.16.  This gave us a profit for the event of $1123.84.    Bob also discussed a debriefing we held to identify what things went well and what we could improve on for the next year’s banquet.  The bottom line was we all had a good time, with great food and company, and made some money for our club’s activities for the next year.

Evan updated us on the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) project.  Our chapter will be supporting two schools, Rumsey Hall and Washington Montessouri, which we are taking over from the Candlewood Chapter.  Evan and Dick Heffernon will be the chapter representatives.  They brought eggs to the two schools so they could get started and we donated money to replace one of the chillers.  Dave Paavola sent out a notice to see if members could make a special contribution to the TIC project to defray costs.  Bob Hart will be drafting a letter to area banks to see if they will also help sponsor this important program.

Jim Fedorich discussed getting a limited number of our Naugatuck River maps colored and framed to be used as fundraiser prizes.  He currently has a price of $35 to color the prints and now is going to get a price for the framing to see if this could be a potential money maker.

Our TU Chapter will be co-sponsoring a free boat inspection performed by the United States Coast Guard Auxillary.  The inspection is currently set up for Saturday, April 2nd at the Torrington Fish and Game grounds from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  This inspection will also include canoes and kayaks.  This inspection is to help boaters with the safety of their crafts and will not be used to penalize anyone.  People are to be reminded to have their fire extinguishers, floatation devices and registration on board.  There will be free food and drinks for attendees.

Eric Long asked the Club for a donation to help support the Riverton Fishing Derby to be held on opening day for the area kids.  We voted on giving the derby $200.

Tim Berry from the Connecticut DEP was our speaker for the evening.  Tim talked about the stocking program where the state is planning on stocking ~700,000 trout this year with up to 60% of the fish going in by opening day.  He said there were additional conservation officers this year and they were going to provide a bigger presence on the Housatonic River than in previous years.  He talked briefly on the proposed closing of the Kensington hatchery due to state budget constraints.  He also told us state sales of fishing licenses last year were down 20% - probably due to a combination of the economy and the increased license fees.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 PM,

The April monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
