NW CT Chapter of
Trout Unlimited
Minutes of Meeting
April 5, 2011
The April meeting was
called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim
Fedorich. Seventeen people were in attendance.
The Secretary’s Report
for March was read by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.
The Treasurer’s Report
was given by Evan Williams. There is currently $2074.65 in our
checkbook. The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.
President Fedorich
reported on the free boat inspection performed by the United States
Coast Guard Auxillary held on Saturday, April 2nd at the
Torrington Fish and Game grounds. Unfortunately, there were no boats
that showed up for inspection. A suggestion was made that our date may
have been too early in the year and we might try for a May date next
year.
Bob Hart read a copy of
a funding solicitation letter he was sending out to local banks in
support of our Trout in the Classroom (TIC) project. There was a
correction pointed out in the towns where we have our programs. Doc
Schildgen also suggested sending out a solicitation request to the
Mohegan Sun tribe. Jim will get contact information.
Jim Fedorich announced
there will be a 1st year anniversary function at the
Northwest Sporting Goods & Supply (the old Nicholas Sporting Goods
store) on Old Winsted Road Saturday, April 9th from 9 AM to 4
PM.
Evan Williams brought
up a motion to donate money to the upcoming Casting for Recovery event
similar to what we did last year. A motion was made and passed to
donate $150.
Evan announced to the
group that our chapter was again invited to the Annual Duck Day. This
year it will be held on Sunday, June 5th at the
Ripley-Livingston Conservancy in Litchfield form 10 AM to 4 PM. We will
have a tent there and provide casting instructions to the attendees.
Anyone who would like to help out on that day may contact Evan.
Doc Schildgen mentioned
he continues to be involved in fly casting lessons every third Sunday at
White Memorial from 1:00 PM to whenever. He asked for some help. Dick
Heffernon said he could help out.
Jim presented a notice
from TU National requesting all local chapters adhere to a set of
by-laws which they provided. Bob Hart will review and report on for the
next meeting.
There was a group
discussion on the recent announcement from the state DEP there have been
confirmed findings of the invasive species of algae, Didymosphenia
Geminata, also known as Didymo or Rock Snot, in the West Branch of the
Farmington River. This is devastating news as this algae can smother a
river and there is no known way to cleanse a river once it is
established. We all must take precautions to prevent spreading it to
other rivers. This involves making sure you follow basic steps with
waders, boats, kayaks, etc. – namely Check, Clean, Dry. Details can be
found on multiple websites and DEP announcements.
The program for this
evening was a fly tying demonstration and class presented by our very
own Shawn Britton, professional fly tyer, guide, outdoor writer and
artist. Shawn had us tie up three versions of a Hendrickson – the
emerger, the wet and a spinner. There were several tyers in the class
and everyone came away with more knowledge of fly tying, as well as some
nice flies.
The meeting adjourned
at 9:20 PM,
The May monthly meeting
will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks
Club.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Hart
