NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

May 3, 2011

The May meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim Fedorich.  Fifteen people were in attendance.

The Secretary’s Report for April was read by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Evan Williams. There is currently $2569.65 in our checkbook, of which $200 is tagged for the TIC program.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

Evan Williams presented a handout of the results of the latest TU State Council Report and reviewed it.  Among the items discussed was a New England Regional meeting to be held at Homewood Suites in Farmington on Friday, July 29th through Sunday, July 31st.  It was also announced the Annual Connecticut Hunting and Fishing Day was to be held October 1st and 2nd from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Bob Hart reported on a draft for club by-laws that was given to us by TU National.  Although most of it was basic and acceptable, there were several paragraphs Bob recommended the Board revise the wording before we accepted it as our own.

Bob Hart updated the club on the solicitation for money for our TIC program.  Six letters and applications were sent out to area banks and some clubs soliciting money for TIC.  To date we have had one response – from Torrington Savings Bank with a $100 donation.  Jim Fedorich will be getting contact information so we can also send letters out to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods.

Jim Fedorich brought up a suggestion to donate $200 to the Housatonic River Outfitters for their stocking program.  This was passed by the membership.

Jim also announced a couple of upcoming events.

·      The Annual Naugatuck River Cleanup will be held on Saturday, June 4th at the Sullivan Senior Center in Torrington.  It will run from 9:00 AM to Noon and our club will provide free food and drink for the attendees.

·      The Annual Duck Day will be held on Sunday, June 5th.  Anyone interested in volunteering may contact Evan Williams.

·      The “Women Gone Wild” event benefiting Multiple Sclerosis will be held on Saturday, June 25th at the Harwinton Fish and Game Club.  Jim is asking for volunteers that would be interested in participating in a fly-tying demonstration.

Bob Hart read two letters our club received.  The first was a thank you from “Casting for Recovery” acknowledging our donation to their event.  The second was to announce our club received a $500 donation from The Friends of the Naugatuck River to help us with our work in preserving the Naugatuck River.

Evan mentioned Bill Case from the Farmington River Chapter was asking if we wanted to share our fall picnic as we did last year.  Members felt this was a good idea and Evan was to contact Bill to come up with a date for the event.

The program for this evening was a presentation by Mike Beauchene of the CT DEP.  Mike is an Environmental Analyst for the State and spoke to us on the recent findings of the invasive species of algae, Didymosphenia Geminata, also known as Didymo or Rock Snot, in the West Branch of the Farmington River.  Although this is serious, Mike said we should not panic and learn how to deal with it, including taking precautions to prevent spreading it to other rivers.  This involves making sure you follow basic steps with waders, boats, kayaks, etc. – namely Check, Clean, Dry.  Details can be found on multiple websites and DEP announcements.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 PM,

The June monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
