NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

June 4, 2013

The June meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club by President Jim Fedorich.  There were eleven attendees.

The Secretary’s report for May was read by Secretary Bob Hart and was accepted as read.

The Treasurer’s Report for May was read by Treasurer Evan Williams.  There is $3712.08 in the treasury, with $250 earmarked for TIC.

Our Chapter provided fly casting demonstrations and fly tying demonstrations at the Free Fishing Day on May 11th, 2013 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Kent Falls.  In addition, we helped stock 500 trout in the brook.  Unfortunately, there were very few turnouts for the event.

The Annual Naugatuck River Cleanup was held in conjunction with the Torrington Conservation Commission on Saturday, June 1st at the Sullivan Senior Center from 9:00 AM to noon.  Two dozen volunteers cleaned up the river from the north end McDonalds down to the Park, and also included the Campville section of the river.  Approximately 7 yards of garbage were collected.  Our Chapter provided food and drinks for the volunteers.

Jim Fedorich announced our Chapter received a $250 check from the Friends of the Naugatuck River to help offset costs of the river cleanup.

We will be contacting Ed Machowski from the CT DEEP to schedule training on “Inventorying Culverts in Connecticut” program he described to us at the May meeting.

The Casting for Recovery retreat is scheduled for the weekend of June 8th.  The fishing segment of the program will be at Frank Schildgen’s pond.

Jim Fedorich reported the Regional TU meeting is to be held July 19th, 20th, and 21st at Windham Mountain in the Catskills.  TU will help fund this meeting by $125 per person.  So far, Ron Leoni, Evan Williams, Jim Fedorich and Rob Redman have signed up.  Anyone else who may be interested in attending, please contact Jim.

Jim announced Kim Barbieri will be stepping down from her position as
Torrington’s Conservation Commissioner next April.  Her replacement is supposed to be named by the end of this year.

Our TU Chapter will be looking for some kind of boulder project or tree planting project for the Naugatuck River to help the fish survive the summer heat.  Torrington is still under contract with the Army Corp of Engineers to make a last inspection of the Naugatuck River.  And California has a lawsuit filed against the Army Corp that will dictate the future of river bank plantings.  As a result, any planting activities are on hold.  However, the Boulder Project Plan could be drawn up and submitted to the Army Corps for review.

This was the final meeting of our Chapter for the summer.  We will meet again in September with a joint picnic with our Chapter and the Farmington River Chapter.  The picnic is scheduled for Saturday, September 7th at the Matthies Grove recreation area on the Farmington River.  More details will come out over the summer.

The meeting ended at 8:15 PM.

As mentioned, this was the final meeting of the season.  Watch for flyers and our website for upcoming schedules.   See you at the September picnic.  And until then, Tight Lines to all!

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart

Secretary, NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited
