NW CT Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Minutes of Meeting

December 7, 2010

The December meeting was held at 7:30 PM downstairs at the Torrington Elks Club.  Thirty-six people were in attendance.

The regular business portion of our meeting was postponed as we held our annual Christmas party.  There was food and drink and good company shared by all.

Jim Fedorich did interrupt the festivities for a quick update on our upcoming Annual Fundraising Banquet. The banquet will be a Game Dinner held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Torrington Elks Lodge.  Hors d’oeuvres will be served from 6:00 – 7:00 PM with the dinner starting at 7:00 PM.  There will be door prizes, silent auctions, and bucket raffles.  This is our major fundraiser that supports our projects and programs throughout the year.

The menu for the evening sounds delicious with the food served family style at the tables.  The menu includes fish chowder, salmon tar tar, Buffalo meatballs, rabbit cacciatore and wild boar loin, as well as all the extras.  Tickets are $35 a head and may be purchased from any of the chapter officers.  Seating will be limited, so get your tickets early.

Kim Barbieri from the Torrington Conservation Commission gave us a brief update on the Army Corp regarding the Naugatuck River.  She mentioned Phases I and II were just about complete.  This includes clearing the banks of the Naugatuck River.  She did mention there was some good news/bad news with this project.  From a conservation stand point, we don’t like to see the banks cleared.  However, this process should remove the invasive plants along the river.  The City of Torrington will be responsible for planting grass along the banks of the river and keeping the grass short.  In addition, Kim mentioned they may be able to use the flow requirements set by the Corp to our advantage and she is working to add some deeper channels and holes that could hold and protect trout in the future.  This would be in the third phase of the project.

Kim has been a great champion for the Naugatuck River, conservation and the trout population and we should all thank her for her efforts.  She asked our chapter for more support when it comes to meetings on the river to help her with her efforts against the bureaucracy.

Our thanks to Bruce Strawinski and the staff of the Elks for a great evening.

The January monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 4th, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the Torrington Elks Club.  The speaker for the evening will be Dr. William Vincent giving us a presentation on “Salmonella Poisoning”.  If this is anything like Dr. Bill’s previous presentations, you will not want to miss it.  And don’t forget to reserve February 12th for our banquet.  See you at both.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Hart
